Abstract:
This paper explores some issues of genre theory in modern western linguistics characterized by numerous and versatile interests in the field. One of the issues is «genre» study alongside with such lin-guistic notions as «register», «style», «discourse» and «text-type». Another point drives to the field of sociolinguistics and considers «genre» as a social action. The paper shows the priority of social charac-teristics over linguistic ones in genre studies, i.e. «the action» is more important than discourse contents and form in genre formation.
