Abstract
After the relative failure of machine translation and the analytical approaches that served it, the state of the art in these three domains points to a higher evaluation of the hermeneutic approaches, which are closer to the reality of professional translating. We think that bringing together the results of hermeneutical research and cognitivistic research will lead to a better understanding of what goes on in the mind of the translator and provide a scientific basis for the new evaluative criterion of «interindivi-dual plausibility» [Stefanink 1997], which has become a necessity after the loss of analytical objecti-vity as quality assessment.
