Abstract: 
The article describes the main results of cognitive linguistic research conducted to investigate the peculiarities of the concept PUNISHMENT in the Russian national conceptual system compared to the English one. Notional structures of lexical units explicating the concept are thoroughly described and compared, and cognitive features of the concept based on various discourse data are analyzed.
