Abstract:
The article makes an attempt to clarify the nature of riddles in epitaphs and the principles of their usage. The examples of epitaphs containing riddles in the names of the dead, dates, epitaph for-mulas as well as in the texts themselves and rituals, illustrate a notion on riddles as most powerful guarantee of keeping epitaphs in the field of the sacred.
