THE SPECIFICITY OF REPRESENTING TEMPORAL RELATIONS IN BUILDING TERMS

Abstract:  The article focuses on the basic ways of representing temporal relations in construction terminology.

The first way is orientation of events in time relative to each other (simultaneity or sequence). This way is widespread in terms of building technology, because building technology is a hierarchical system of production processes. Every production process of higher level is a sequence of production processes of lower level. Therefore every production process of any level (except the lowest level) can be described as a script that consists of the following elements: subject, object, time, place, instrument and result. “Time” is a position of this script in the script of the higher level.
The second way is a chronological indication (for example, in 2005). This way is far less common than the first one, because construction science is a utilitarian type of knowledge. This knowledge is used at different times. For that reason only imperfective aspect verbs are used in books on construction: perfective aspect verbs point out to chronological localization.
The third way is orientation of events in time relative to the point of speaking. This is the system of “past/present/future”. This system is very seldom used in construction terms, because the speaker’s figure is not important in literature on building.
More than 550 construction terms were analyzed. The first way is used in 4.8 % of terms, the second way – 0.35 %, the third way – 0.5 %.
The construction science represents typically engineering and industrial technology sciences. Therefore the results of this research can be extrapolated on terminology of other engineering sciences.
