UNDERSTANDING PHRASEOLOGICAL UNITS AS NATIONALLY SPECIFIC METAPHORS

Abstract:  The topic of the article is understanding phraseological units as nationally specific metaphors. The article looks at translation of phraseological units in terms of hermeneutical methods of interpretation. Phraseological units are viewed as an instrument of facilitating reflexivity which is further linked to different levels of thought-activity system. 
The research shows that English phraseological units used in fictional texts facilitate reflexivity linked to levels of thought-activity different from those which can be traced in the above mentioned texts translated into Russian. The article gives examples when though the Russian translation of the phraseological unit is considered equivalent in terms of linguistic approach, it can facilitate different reflexivity in terms of hermeneutic approach which proves the fact that phraseological units are mostly nationally specific metaphors which reflect the nation’s world view and which are not individual but standard for the whole nation. The results of the research can be useful for translation practice, mostly for literary translation.
