Abstract:  The study of the lexicon of political discourse, including both terms and names of phenomena characterized by ideological substratum, makes it possible to identify the diversity of conceptual derivation process. The research shows that the conceptual derivation of political lexicon most often leads to semantic aberration though there are some examples of semantic melioration. Consequently, the paper attempts to justify the terms “kontseptual’naya aberatsia” (conceptual aberration) and “kontseptual’naya melioratsia” (conceptual melioration) to name the process of a new/other concept cognition which results in the modification of certain associations or formation of derogatory or positive associations. The reasons for such conceptual modification are differing; much depends on both national and individual conceptual world. Another political concept in a new context is often subject to misinterpretation or manipulation which leads to semantic aberration of its verbal representations and, finally, to a communicative bump. The paper presents the analysis of some examples used in Russian and English political discourse which reflect both conceptual aberration: DEMOCRACY/DEMOKRATIIA and conceptual melioration VYGODA (meaning ‘profit’). Applying a cognitive-discursive approach to the study of the means used to name a phenomenon of another culture based on the comparison of the conceptual worlds and language mapping of languacultures in contact, shows that a verbal sign as a part of its language system is formed as a result of the conceptualization of a certain phenomenon. The study presented specifies the process leading to semantic aberration/melioration as a kind of conceptual derivation process named in the article “conceptual aberration/melioration”. The author argues that conceptual derivation especially realized as conceptual aberration is becoming a powerful means of manipulation in global political communication.
