PROBLEMS OF VERBAL COMMUNICATION IN COGNITIVE PERSPECTIVE

Abstract:  The article analyzes problems of verbal communication in the Cognitive Semantics theory dimension. From this perspective the effectiveness of communication is ascribed to mutual conceptual accommodation of its participants in the course of their speech interaction.

Linking problems of conceptual accommodation to the interlocutors’ individual structures of mind and their conceptual contiguity the author argues that effective communication as well as speech habits development heavily depend upon speakers’ world knowledge construal and their language-usage experience, and lays special emphasis on the variety of human individual conceptual systems structure that should also be taken into account. He also comes to the conclusion that in order to avoid communicative failures, especially in cross-cultural communication, the interlocutors should be aware of possible cognitive contexts supporting construction of ambiguous meanings.

This conclusion makes the use of congruent maxims and linguistic means of meaning construction a strong demand in verbal communication. These maxims and means as well as communicative failures in Russian are also analyzed in the article.
