LINGUO-COGNITIVE PROPERTIES OF THE CATEGORY OF SPACE IN THE MEDIEVAL FICTIONAL WORLD VIEW

Abstract:  The present paper studies cognitive mechanisms of reconstructing the cultural- and social-relevant model of reality categorisation and systematically describes peculiarities of linguistic representation of the cognitive space model in the medieval fictional world view.
The category of ‘space’ is considered within the diachronic approach based on the comprehensive study of medieval cultural property sites in the Middle-and-Upper German, Middle English, Old French and medieval Latin languages. The main research method is content analysis. Applying this method for analysing the text allows to examine the new phenomena occurred highly objectively and reliably. The methodological range of the content analysis includes the following practical methods and techniques: a) the continuous sampling method followed by clustering linguistic units according to certain (key) categories; b) the quantitative method (quantitative calculation of occurrences of the linguistic phenomena under study); and c) the correlation analysis to reveal the interrelations between representatives of key categories in the analised fictional texts. The context analysis, interpretation analysis, lexico-semantic and lexico-etymological analyses are widely used.
The authors state that the category of ‘space’ comprises the main principles of conceptualization of the world around, namely: the division of the world based on ontological (according to the rules of human existence) and egocentrical principles. Theses ways of organising the knowledge and images of the world around are obligate for the Medieval West European culture.
