THE DOMINANT PRINCIPLE OF TRANSLATING AND MECHANISMS OF ITS ENACTION IN DISCOURSE

Abstract:  The article grounds the dominant principle as a fundamental functional mechanism of discourse knowledge integration and transfer and human cognition in general.

With respect to translating this principle entails that the aspects of the source text, which get salient for particular translators and are represented in the target texts, depend on a system of dominant structures in the translator’s knowledge hypertext. Such cognitive dominants, activated predominantly in a non-reflective mode of phenomenal consciousness, drive the processes of evaluative construal, sociocultural orientating and sociocultural positioning, underpinning the translator’s textual visibility. These processes, in their turn, are mediated by perspectivation, claimed to constitute a basic cognitive mechanism of knowledge transfer in translating and to integrate the subjective and the social facets of human cognition and linguistic construal.

Components, types, modes, dimensions and discourse processes of perspective framing are then discussed and illustrated by examples. The author shows that textual shifts in translation entail shifts in social, visual, cognitive and hence linguistic perspective on objects (entities, events, situations) narrated in the text and their construal as different categories, profiling alternate affordances of those objects, focal from other spatiotemporal and sociocultural points of view. Such perspectival shifts are claimed to be driven by cognitive dominants as well.
