CONCEPTUAL STRUCTURES STENA/WALL AS IDENTITY MARKERS: “WE” VS “THEY” IN POLITICAL DISCOURSE

CONCEPTUAL STRUCTURES STENA/WALL AS IDENTITY MARKERS: “WE” VS “THEY” IN POLITICAL DISCOURSE

Abstract:  Global political changes turned out to be much favoured by many nations: the spread of terrorism led to military campaigns, and, consequently, destruction of settlements which made resi-dents cross the borders as refugees or asylum seekers. These processes find their reflection in changing values, changes of human minds, world view and identities. Gone is the epoch of the 1990s when we were crushing walls in Europe trying to create a common home, now we are facing the time of wall building aimed at protecting both the borders and ourselves against migrants who are now viewed as enemies.
All these changes constitute the conceptual structures of WALL in both English and Russian political discourse.
Based on cognitive-discursive approach and anthropological paradigm the paper attempts to single out the main conceptual components of WALL and the metaphoric models of identities which are being formed in contemporary media political discourse.

Keywords:  collective/individual) identity, metaphor, conceptual markers, conceptual characteristics.
