Abstract:  The purpose of the article is to reveal and describe the cognitive-semiotic essence of the precedent name as one of the markers of intertextuality. The objectives of the research are to study the precedent name as a special sign which is characterized by the syncretism of indexical and symbolic functions; to analyze the semantic essence of precedent names that symbolize certain qualities; to consider the role of cultural context in the fulfilment of the symbolic function of precedent names.
The precedent name is shown as a special sign which is characterized by the syncretism of indexical and symbolic functions, the latter being in the focus of attention and its indexical function being defocused. The focusing of its symbolic function enables the precedent name to become a standard, or a symbol of a certain quality. This interplay of focuses underlies the stylistic figure of antonomasia.
The emergence of a symbolic meaning is the result of the multilayer mechanism of conceptual metonymy and metaphor, metonymy playing the leading role. Being the product of a certain culture and a certain historical period of a linguocultural society, precedent names always bear the stamp of both the culture and the history of this society. Transposed into a new cognitive (cultural or historic) context they may develop new symbolic meanings. Thus, the study of precedent names in the cognitive-semiotic perspective presents great interest as it enables to consider such important cognitive and semiotic issues as the typology of language signs, the cognitive mechanisms of figurative meanings and culture-related character of language units.
The methodology of the study is based on intertextual analysis, conceptual analysis, comparative analysis and experimental method. The results can be used by researchers in the field of cognitive linguistics and intertextual interaction.
