Abstract:  Linguistic creativity is considered an important means of discourse construal demonstrating the role of creative thought in communication and speech production.
This study examines various manifestations of linguistic creativity which suffice to construe contrasting discourse types – the cinematic discourse and the discourse of children’s literature. In the present work, we take a new slant on the problem of linguistic creativity assessment by distinguishing two forms of creativity, with the one attributed to discourse in general (macro discourse) and the other expressed in a particular discourse type (micro discourse).
At all levels of language there may be traced a definite set of linguistic means exhibiting different types of discourse norm violation, code-shifting, and stylistic variation which may serve as parameters of both macro and micro discourse linguistic creativity evaluation. We have elaborated the procedure of a complex qualitative and quantitative analysis of linguistic creativity aimed at defining its parametrical values in two discourse types with the idea of a further contrastive study.
The parametric annotation was carried out subsequently in two (equal in size) text fragments representing the cinematic discourse and the discourse of children’s literature, and was followed by the variance analysis which revealed the peculiar features of two discourse types construal in terms of their linguistic creativity potential.
The method elaborated and the results obtained help to step further towards the goal of understanding the interplay of cognition and discourse.
