REPRESENTATION OF THE CONCEPT COUNTERACTION IN THE SOCIOCULTURAL CONTEXT OF GLOBAL THREAT

Abstract:  The article concentrates on the study of the concept COUNTERACTION that has become highly topical in the published documents of the WHO and in the media given the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic. The aim of the article is to explore cognitive mechanisms of the pandemic threats conceptualizations, to analyze the forces and actors conceived of mentally and represented verbally as counteragents. The article also aims at exploring knowledge transfer as a source of concept change.
The methods used are: conceptual analysis, frame analysis, analysis of socio-cultural interpretant, principle of dynamic conceptual semantics.
We prove that basic cognitive mechanisms are built on the concept change. The results of the research are: basic cognitive mechanisms of virus conceptualization as the agent of threat are demonstrated; the changes in the structure of the concepts AGENT and COUNTERAGENT are explained by the concept extension that manifests itself in the language and in the mental models of pandemic threat. We prove that transfer from scientific knowledge to commonly shared knowledge is the foundation of the concept COUNTERACTION extension. The results can be used in cognitive linguistics as well as in other fields of the humanities.
