Knowledge as a cognitive phenomenon is characterized from different points of view. Scholars differentiate between verbal and non-verbal knowledge, every-day and scientific knowledge which, in its turn, is divided into empirical and theoretical. As far as its opposing notion is concerned ignorance until now has not been researched on the basis of its typology.
The article is devoted to compensating the existing lacunae by systematization of language representations found on the pages of Russian literature which is called to reflect reality in an artistic way.
The author suggests considering typological multitude of ignorance examples while analyzing the following points:
1). Ignorance as manifestation of children’s naiveté.
2). “Academic” benightedness.
3). Generic words problem.
4). Alien words wrong interpretation.
5). Cultural “gaps”.
6). “Militant” profanation.
The method of research is based on the reader's ability to comprehend and estimate illustrations of ignorance from fiction citings, revealing the types of ignorance listed above.
