Abstract:
This article aims at giving an account of the semantic models engaged in the formation of the semantic structures of substantive-indicative relative adjectives. The analyzed subtype of relative adjectives is characterized by the potential to form an argument-predicate group with the described noun, while other denominal relative adjectives in the same situation make up an argument-argument group. Thus, the author analyzes the substantive-indicative group of relative adjectives as a transitional class between the argument-predicate adjectives and qualitative adjectives, which are predicate proper. This results in the presence of both predicate and substantive models of semantic derivation in this subclass of adjectives.
The predicate models of semantic derivation are built on the typical substantial basis of the property. As the properties do not exist separately but in things, the metaphor or metonymy of predicate words does not originate from properties themselves but from typical things with such properties. The extension of combinability of the relative adjective makes the metonymical meaning possible; when describing an exotic, or unusual object, relative adjectives develop metaphorical meanings.
