WHEN DOES PERMUTATION OF ADDENDS CHANGE THE SUM? OR ON CORRELATION BETWEEN LINEAR AND HIERARCHIC STRUCTURES IN A TEXT

Abstract:  The paper analyzes correlation between linear and hierarchic structures within a text. The research focuses on the reasons of mismatch of conventional properties of language means used by the authors of texts and their resulting influence on the recipient of the text. The discussion is based on various types of texts including media texts.
Generation of the text is interpreted as a solution of specific communicative and cognitive tasks in a particular context performed by discourse participants with different personal identity and shared group identity. The author treats the text as one possible realization of an invariant model of the text known to the large group of language speakers with shared cultural knowledge. The invariant of every type of text is formed in the culture during a long period of time and, as a typical text, it forms the norms of expectancy for text recipients. These norms are interrelated with the semantic and syntactic macro- and microstructure of the text. Comparability and – to some ex-tent – predictability of norms of expectancy of discourse participants as language users with shared knowledge of culture are based on various cognitive structures acquired by all members of language community. These structures of knowledge also constitute the core of the group identity structure. The understanding of these processes takes into account the fact that the number of poss-ible realizations of the invariant text can be equal to the number of language speakers with common cultural knowledge who refer to this invariant in a discourse context suitable for this type of text.
The author pays special attention to syntactic and textual mechanisms of verbalization of knowledge involved in text generation. The examples presented in the paper illustrate the correlation of linear and hierarchic structures involved in the generation of the text, on the one hand, and activating certain knowledge about the world in the minds of recipients, on the other hand. The author claims that the linear sequence of textual components with different degrees of complexity has a significant influence not only on the order in which new information is perceived, but also on the configuration of knowledge, activated by different mechanisms of knowledge verbalization in the minds of recipients, who share language and culture with the author of the text.
