REPRESENTATION OF NATIONAL CONSCIOUSNESS IN LANGUAGE ASSOCIATIONS

Abstract:  The article illustrates how national consciousness and thought are reflected in linguistic associations, using the responses of Uzbek and Turkish youth to the stimulus word “homeland”. The results of the experiment revealed that, in Uzbek culture, the concept of “motherland” is primarily associated with elements such as space, family, household, and home. In contrast, Turkish culture tends to associate “homeland” more with state attributes.

For Uzbek students, the homeland is perceived not only as a physical territory but also as a place, a positively regarded country. In the minds of Turkish youth, the national flag plays a prominent role in their conception of homeland. This indicates that young people in Turkey are raised with a deep respect for their homeland and national symbols, which are seen as sacred. Based on high-frequency responses, the associative portrait of the homeland in the imagination of Uzbek youth includes the following elements: place of birth, free Uzbekistan, the location of umbilical bloodshed, motherland, family, residence, sacred like a mother, soil, country, and home. The associations expressed by Turkish youth reveal that their image of the homeland features the following: the flag, the nation, soil, Turkey, love, a soldier, martyrs, home, and freedom.
